The Celebrate Café.
Yesterday, the Celebrate Café, um, celebrated its official opening. Located on the Bowery inside the Bowery Poetry Club, it's owned by the Lower Eastside Girls Club, which uses it as a job training and employment program.

The café is managed by women who have completed the club's training programs and staffed by girls who are currently enrolled in their leadership and career training courses. Its menu features pastries from the club's Sweet Things Bake Shop on Avenue C, sandwiches served on bread from the neighboring Parisi Bakery, fair trade coffees and teas, Fizzy Lizzy sodas, cider and pies from Breezy Hill Orchards, and Greenmarket produce. If fair-trade coffee is no longer a rarity on the Bowery, the price tag certainly is: It costs $1. And that definitely merits a celebration.
