The Second Avenue Subway Slams the Doors on Outdoor Cafeés
Even though the endlessly talked-about Second Avenue subway still seems like a figment of a wistful city planner's imagination, it's very real -- and very personal -- for many of the Upper East Side restaurants that line the busy street.
No alfresco dining for you!
amNewYork reports that 22 restaurants have had their outdoor café licenses revoked or temporarily suspended due to subway construction, costing them thousands in lost revenue. There are 26 restaurants with outdoor licenses on the stretch of Second Avenue between 63rd and 96th streets. Affected businesses include Jackson Hole Burger and Cinema Café, which has two other locations in the city. All three screen silent movies during dinner service; one assumes that the sound of jackhammers doesn't make an ideal soundtrack, though perhaps it would unwittingly underscore the message of Metropolis.
