Dish No. 99: No. 7 Sub Shop's General Tso's Tofu Sandwich

Today's pick: the General Tso's Tofu sandwich ($9) at No. 7 Sub.
Although the No. 7 Sub Shop menu changes almost constantly to keep up with Tyler Kord's imagination, the General Tso's Tofu has remained more or less a constant, and for good reason.
A soft, pliant bun houses deep-fried slabs of tofu, which are accompanied by julienned carrots, arugula, broccoli mayonnaise, and caramelized onion. The tofu is crunchy and creamy, the onions are slippery and sweet, and the mayo is compellingly junky. According to the latest menu, the General Tso's has replaced everything but the tofu with peas, roasted garlic, and pickled rhubarb, but the tofu could be served with only a drizzle of motor oil and a sprinkling of cigarette ash and still provoke sighs of contentment.
