America's Best Restroom Contest Seeks New York Restaurant Nominees

We at Fork in the Road have a thing for intelligent restaurant bathroom design. (Antiquated elevators? Cyclone flush? Yes, please.)

And so does David Brandt, the survey editor of the annual Best Restroom Contest. Brandt was just on The Brian Lehrer Show to talk about the national competition (there's also a Canadian version), which is accepting nominations until August 31.

After Lehrer questioned why a New York restaurant loo has never won the honor, Brandt acknowledged that Grub Street had asked the same question, in slightly more scatological terms, two years ago. The problem, it seems, isn't our porcelain thrones as much as the people who use them: Apparently, not enough of us bother to nominate or vote for our favorites, and thus our chances for glory are flushed down the drain.

Currently, the contest nominees include the Bryant Park Hotel, which is fine, but no substitute for Morimoto's mechanized toilets and trippy flower arrangements. So come on, New York: We can't let the johns of Gilbert, Arizona, or Fort Wayne, Indiana, steal our thunder. It's time to shit or get off the pot.
