New York's new gin palace will be fancier than this one.
Ravi DeRossi, co-owner of an East Village mini-empire that includes Desnuda, Mayahuel, Cienfuegos, and Death & Co., is opening a new spot called Gin Palace, a spin on the original Victorian dive bars.

DeRossi says that he is aiming to open Gin Palaces in Los Angeles and New York simultaneously -- he's already started construction on a location in downtown L.A., and is currently scouting locations in New York. He'll probably branch out from the East Village this time, though. "I don't think the community board will give me another liquor license," he told us. "I have five already, so they'd probably turn me down." He's hoping to open both the East and West Coast branches in about six months.

Gin Palace will be an upscale spin on the louche enterprises where Victorians boozed up. It will focus on gin, with a majority of cocktails made with the spirit. As for food, DeRossi says that he'll offer "hundreds" of different kinds of tea sandwiches, served on three-tiered silver platters.
