Michael Batterberry, who with his wife, Ariane, founded Food & Wine and Food Arts magazines, died on Wednesday of complications relating to cancer. The New York Times is reporting that Batterberry -- a genteel man, as anyone who met him might describe him -- declined to disclose his age in recent years. He was 78.

At his death, he was still the editor in chief of Food Arts, and was honored earlier this year with a James Beard Lifetime Achievement Award. Interestingly, Food & Wine, launched in 1978 as The International Review of Food and Wine, was first financed, in part, by Hugh Hefner.
