• Isn't the assumption that other features of the economy, like supply and demand will not be involved. If I were a manufacturer of diet soda or bottled water and there was an increase in demand due to being exempt from the tax, I might raise prices. So, is it possible that the net effect of the tax will be to raise prices across the board and people might go back to the taxed soft drink. If so, the rich will get richer and the poor will get fat. Is this possible?

After all, The Big Nanny knows much better than you what you should be eating and drinking, especially if your annual income falls at or below the lower middle class.
