What to Drink at Madam Geneva: The Freedonia
The drink: Freedonia
Vicky Wasik Let Freedonia reign.
The bar: Madam Geneva, 4 Bleecker Street
The price: $12
The ingredients: Campari, Bluecoat Gin, Yellow Chartreuse, fresh grapefruit juice, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, shaken and served up in a cocktail glass with a bitter yuzu sugar rim and lemon peel garnish.
The buzz ...
Gin and Campari complement each other so beautifully, but I've never quite understood why Campari and grapefruit are such a popular combination -- the two have such competing flavors. Herbaceous Chartreuse, a touch of sugar, and a dry gin kick help keep this drink in check, while the candied citrus rim is like a toy in a Happy Meal: You might not miss it if it weren't there, but it is, so go ahead and enjoy it, even if it is just a distraction from the main event. And the event in question? The cocktail evokes a summer dance party, more so than the darkened back room you're sipping it in might suggest.
