Calorie Posting Laws Like New York's to Expand Countrywide

Popeyes.jpg
Thanks to President Obama's health care reform bill, calorie-posting laws similar to the ones we already have in New York will soon expand nationally: Chain restaurants and vending machines will be required to post calories in a "clear and conspicuous manner." The rules apply to any chain with 20 or more locations and vending machine operators that own 20 or more machines. Restaurants with fewer than 20 outlets can voluntarily opt in, though that seems unlikely.

The calories will have to be shown on menus and menu boards, including at drive-ups. The FDA will be ready to enforce these regulations as of March 2011 and is currently seeking public comment.
