Grimaldi's Faces Eviction, Looks to Manhattan

Could the last pie be nigh?
With a line outside the door that stretches down the street, you wouldn't expect the famed pizza place to have trouble paying its rent, but apparently that's exactly the case at Grimaldi's. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the pizzeria has received an eviction notice after failing to pay rent and city taxes. This Friday, the landlord will ask a state Supreme Court judge in Brooklyn to kick the popular pizza operation out.

What's more, owner Frank Ciolli has lost his right to renew the lease. While plans to open a Grimaldi's in the new Limelight Marketplace were delayed and a proposed location at the South Street Seaport was quashed earlier this year, Ciolli is planning a new pizzeria on Sixth Avenue and 20th Street in Manhattan. His son, Joe, heads a small Grimaldi's chain with locations in Texas, Arizona, and Nevada.

The landlord started the eviction process in April, claiming that Ciolli owes her some $44,000. He also owes the city $12,250 in property taxes and business improvement district charges. Could the end of an era really be approaching?
