More CB3 Tidbits: Ichiban Taking Over Fat Hippo; Max to Try Its Luck at Tonda

Aside from its thankfully erroneous Nicky's listing, the CB3's upcoming SLA committee meeting agenda augurs a couple other possibly interesting developments for the neighborhood.
71 Clinton Street, home to Fat Hippo until it was evicted in June, may next be occupied by Ichiban, which appears to be a Japanese steakhouse chain. There are actually numerous Ichiban steakhouse chains that can be found on Google, so time will tell if it's the one with locations in Pennsylvania; the one with one other location in Liverpool, New York; or the one hailing from Reno, Nevada. Regardless of the restaurant's provenance, it's fairly safe to say that there will be beef on the menu.
Luigi Iasilli, the owner of Max, has his eye on the old Tonda space at 235 East 4th Street. Tonda, of course, was preceded by the EU, an establishment best remembered for its legendary problems with the community board. But given that Max, Iasilli's well-established restaurant on Avenue B, has its share of neighborhood fans, perhaps he'll be able to shift the fortunes of the seemingly doomed space.
