RIP Cono and Sons, Ben & Jerry's

Today has brought two restaurant death notices: Cono and Sons in Williamsburg has closed after 26 years, and in the East Village, the 22-year-old Ben & Jerry's has stopped scooping ice cream.

The Brooklyn Paper reports that Cono and Sons O'Pescatore, a family-run Italian restaurant on Graham Avenue, closed its doors two weeks ago following its owner's retirement. It had been something of a Brooklyn political hangout, hosting the likes of Assemblyman Vito Lopez, Hillary Clinton, Kirsten Gillebrand, and Caroline Kennedy, and was known for serving abundant portions of pasta, seafood, and veal.

Also known for its abundant portions was Ben & Jerry's, which opened on Third Avenue and East 10th Street in 1988. Jeremiah's Vanishing New York reports that according to a sign in its window, the store closed "due to economic times." Jeremiah predicts that a bubble tea lounge will take its place; our money's on frozen yogurt or cupcakes. Or, failing that, a Chase branch.
