Eating the U.S. Open: Does the Pat LaFrieda Burger Hold to Love?

Is the baseline burger an ace?
It's Day 3 of the U.S. Open, one of the swankiest sporting events you can attend outside a Hamptons polo match. There's a Ralph Lauren shop open till late on the grounds and a slew of celebrity chefs cooking there, too, including Rick Moonen, Jonathan Waxman, and the Iron Chef himself, Masaharu Morimoto. For the plebs, there's a Pat LaFrieda burger in the food court. So, how does it score?

The proprietary USTA meat blend makes for a beefy and juicy patty, especially given that it's grilled to an extreme doneness. It comes on a delightfully squishy white-bread bun, with yellow American cheese, sliced tomato, and lettuce. For $8.50, it's a good deal (for perspective, a pint of Heineken at the Open is $7.50). We suggest ordering it with seasoned waffle fries for $4.50, crispy and potato-y, and fine without additional salt or ketchup. We also spotted people munching on samosas, sushi, Italian sausage, foot-long hot dogs, Southern barbecue, and crepes, as they shopped for tennis balls and polo shirts. Sheesh.
