The Red Rooster Will Be All About Harlem
Marcus Samuelsson has been a busy, busy man lately, what with winning Top Chef Masters, designing cookware for the Manhattan Target, and getting the Red Rooster up and running in Harlem. Samuelsson shared some details about the restaurant with Paper magazine, and from the sounds of it, he has his work cut out for him.
The bi-level space, at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue, will have 140 seats and feature china from Harlem antique shops, wall murals from local artists, and local farmers' market ingredients. Samuelsson wants the food to "taste like I took a bike from the east side of Harlem to the west side of Harlem and told the story of everything I saw. I want to capture the Latin community, the Caribbean and African-American communities, the Italian-American community, the Jewish-American community and the Columbia students. That, to me, is so representative of American food and Americans today."
While the menu has yet to be revealed, Samuelsson will be serving a version of the prawn and basmati rice dish he made for the Obamas' state dinner, cornbread and other traditional Southern foods, and "affordable luxur[ies]" such as a coffee and muffin for $4. The restaurant is slated to open in October.
