Some Pictures from Saturday's 2010 Vendy Awards

Both the sun and the crowds turned out in force for the sixth-annual Vendy Awards, which were held on Saturday on Governors Island. Some twelve hundred people showed up to patronize 18 food trucks, meaning that there were long lines to go along with the gastric overload. But there are certainly worse ways to pass the time than hanging out in the sun, waiting to eat good food, and the waits were greeted with patience and good humor.

By far the longest lines were for the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck and the Kelvin Natural Slush Co. Although the latter ultimately won the Best Dessert award for their all-natural slushies, the former's Doug Quint should have been given a Miss Congeniality prize for his endless good cheer. Asked if he was downing Red Bull to keep up with customer demand, Quint joked that he was actually running on meth: "There's a rotten tooth in every cone!"

In an awards ceremony MC'd by the redoubtable Pat Kiernan, the Best Rookie nod went to the Souvlaki Truck and both the People's Choice and 2010 Vendy Cup were awarded to Astoria's King of Falafel & Schwarma, which beat out the Bistro Truck, El Rey de Sabor, Patacon Pisao, and Schnitzel & Things for the top honor. Accepting the Vendy Cup, falafel king Freddy Zeideia, held his little grandson and said, "Now I'm really the king." In the audience, one woman declared that Zeideia, a three-time award finalist, was "the Susan Lucci of the Vendys." "No," her friend said. "He's the Kate Winslet. He won two awards!"
