What to Drink at Death & Co.: The Cortado
Each week in The Daily Shot, we have ourselves a drink that we think you should try, too.
The drink: The Cortado
thespeakista.com The Cortado: caffeinated for your drinking pleasure.
The bar: Death & Co., 433 East 6th Street
The price: $13
The ingredients: Pampero Aniversario Rum, Lemon Hart 151 Rum, coffee-bean-infused Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth, White Crème de Cacao, demerara syrup, Angostura bitters, and mole bitters, stirred and served up in a pretty glass.
The buzz: With all the buzz about coffee wars (Illy vs. Nespresso, Blue Bottle vs. Stumptown, Starbucks vs. Dunkin' Donuts vs. Mickey D's), you'd think that a cocktail bar would be a place of refuge from all the caffeinated cacophony. Alas -- and thankfully, in this case -- no. The coffee-bean infusion of beautifully bitter Antica in this drink is like a thread of silk running through velvet. And the mole bitters add an almost creamy dimension to the drink. It's not the summeriest of cocktails -- one might call it heavy, or at least weighty -- but in the air-conditioned darkness of the bar, who's to say what the weather is outside?
