The Lower East Side Tenement Museum will roll out a Culinary Center as part of its new visitors center, slated to open in early 2011. Sometime after the initial opening of the center, a demonstration kitchen and curriculum for the Culinary Center will be installed. It's likely to feature cooking demonstrations, workshops for school groups, and culinary-themed tours of the Tenement Museum.

Journalist and author of 97 Orchard: An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement Jane Ziegelman will head up the center. She says she hopes to draw on some of her research for the book for the center.

"97 Orchard and the Culinary Center in a way happened together," she says. "One kind of grew out of the other. I would say the Culinary Center grew out of the book."
