What to Drink at Orient Express: The Mitropa

The drink: The Mitropa

The price: $14
The ingredients: Plymouth gin, Aperol, Cocchi Americano, grapefruit bitters, and Peychaud's bitters, stirred and served up in a cocktail glass with a lemon peel.
The buzz: Straight outta Wikipedia: "Mitropa is a catering company best known for having managed sleeping and dining cars of different German railways for most of the 20th century." It's relevant because Orient Express, the new cocktail bar by the owners of Turks & Frogs, pays tribute to the luxury-train bar cars of old. The drink, with its handsome persimmon color, is as civilized as one would image a cocktail on a European train at the turn of the century would be. Bitter yet bright, herbaceous with a touch of citrus. It made us want to light up a cigarette at the end of a long ivory cigarette holder. And we don't even smoke.
