What We Talk About When We Talk About Yuengling

Some interesting facts we gleaned from The Wall Street Journal's profile of D.G. Yuengling & Son, the Pennsylvania-based brewer that last week announced its plans to buy a former Coors brewing facility in Memphis:

-- Dick Yuengling, the company's 67-year-old fifth-generation owner, drives a 2002 Ford Taurus to work and won't spend money on a car wash.

-- He also doesn't use email, reuses Styrofoam cups, and only got a cell phone last year. Demand for the beer outside of its13-state footprint is such that there is a website called BringYuenglingtoOhio.com.

-- Last year, the company was the only one among the U.S.'s 10 largest beer suppliers to post a double-digit growth rate.

-- And perhaps most important, "Yuengling" is German for "young man."

Lessons learned: It pays to spend 181 years growing a company "slowly and methodically." And it also, apparently, pays to be cheap.
