Bourbon Coffee Coming to West 14th Street

New York is about to receive yet another caffeine infusion, but this time its origins are a bit more far-flung than San Francisco or Portland.

Bourbon Coffee is based in Rwanda, where it has three stores in Kigali. The company, which bills itself as the "first retail brand to originate from Africa," opened its first U.S. location in Washington, D.C., last year, and is also planning to open in Boston. If its outpost at 43 West 14th Street is anything like its other stores, it will feature -- per the company website -- on-site roasting; indigenous, handmade African artwork, murals, furniture, and sculptures; sustainable/green materials; and educational and cultural programs.

Its coffee, as its name suggests, comes from the Bourbon Arabica varietal that is cultivated by Rwandan farmers to whom Bourbon claims it pays higher prices for their beans. It will be served in numerous forms -- espressos, cappuccinos, and macchiatos, et al -- and will be accompanied by a breakfast, lunch, and dessert menu.
