Momofuku Is Indeed Headed to Australia

Sometimes, you can believe what you read on Twitter: Following a rumor that began circulating on the social-media site yesterday, Momofuku has confirmed, via a press release, that it is indeed opening a location in Australia.

The restaurant will be located in Sydney's Star City casino, and is expected to open sometime in late 2011. David Chang's first overseas endeavor will be among several shiny restaurants opening in the $860 million casino, which is being billed as a "lifestyle and entertainment destination." Also representing the United States will be Chase Kojima, a Nobu alum who will open a Japanese restaurant.

Chang first hinted at his intentions in September, while attending the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. During his time there, he told Gourmet Traveller that he was "infatuated" with Australia, and that he and Peter Serpico, the chef de cuisine at Ko, "both think this is a place we could move to." One native ingredient that won't be appearing on his menu? Vegemite. "I'd describe Vegemite as awful," he told the site. "I was thinking about making a dashi out of Marmite, but Vegemite? Never."
