Former Workers Sue Shanghai Café

Does the Shanghai Café's fuchsia glow camouflage unfair labor practices?

In addition to having the city's studliest soup dumplings and niftiest Chinese noodles, the Shangai Café can now claim a lawsuit to its name.

According to the Urban Justice Center, the Mott Street restaurant is being sued by six former workers for violations of federal and state labor laws. The plaintiffs, who claim they regularly worked at least 65 hours per week, allege that the management withheld tips and overtime pay, and attempted to conceal the extra hours of work by posting fake schedules.

The former workers are demanding back wages and damages; they and their attorneys will announce their lawsuit in front of the restaurant at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
