Cup of pour-over drip coffee? There's an app for that. Small restaurants, cafés, and other vendors are using a new smart phone application called Square that allows them to charge customers directly from an iPhone or iPad. Are the days of cash registers numbered?

Per BrooklynBased, squareup.com, launched earlier this year by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, is catching on in Brooklyn, where pop-up shops and indie food merchants abound. The free app works along with a small square device called a "dongle" that plugs right into your iPhone or iPad. Simply swipe a credit card through the device and the customer can sign with a click. Several Brooklyn Flea vendors, as well as the new Fort Greene café WTF, are already users. We anticipate food trucks to promptly follow suit.
