Trouble's a-brewing at the Continental. The bar may be best known for its cheap drinks (a banner outside advertises $10 for any five shots), but it's now coming under fire for its stringent door policy, which some people are claiming is racist.

ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition has previously accused the bar of racism against blacks and gays, and the bar also has been the object of many complaints of discrimination lodged against it on the Internet.

Trigger Smith, the bar's owner, told The Villager, "I do have a dress code, I don't have a color code." However, this door code is what Smith believes is the key to the bar's success. "Within six months, these flash-in-the-pan new clubs are closed when there's no door policy," he told the paper. "We probably turn away more people than these hot, trendy Meatpacking clubs."

The bar is currently under investigation by the Commission on Human Rights. And ANSWER plans to picket the Continental this Saturday, January 29, from 8 to 10 p.m. So if you were planning on grabbing a drink at the Continental this weekend, you might want to reschedule. Unless crossing the picket line is your idea of a fun time.
