Signs of the Times: John's Now Has a Vegan Menu

John's Italian Restaurant has been serving red-sauce Italian-American food since 1908, but now it seems that it's taken a cue from Angelica Kitchen, its next-door neighbor on East 12th Street. According to Jeremiah's Vanishing New York, the restaurant recently added a "Vegan Italian Specialties" menu to its more traditional offerings. Customers can now order dishes like seitan parmigiana (made with Daiya cheese), seitan scallopini, and gluten-free cannoli. Vegan ice cream from Lula's Sweet Apothecary is also on the menu, which has apparently been in the works for the past year. Unorthodox, perhaps, but if it helps the restaurant to stick around for another 103 years, then the more seitan parmigiana, the better.
