More East Side Destruction: Sidewalk Collapses Outside Delancey Resto

There goes the neighborhood.
The East Village isn't the only neighborhood being ravaged by disaster. On the Lower East Side yesterday, the ground literally opened up outside the Olympic Restaurant, at the corner of Delancey and Ludlow streets. Bowery Boogie reports that the sidewalk collapsed in front of the restaurant, leaving a gaping hole in its wake.

A heavy delivery truck parked at the curb for more than two hours was likely to blame. City workers have since covered the rupture, but the idea that a heavy truck could cause a street to cave is disturbing. Maybe the NIMBYs are right: The neighborhood is going to hell in a handbasket.
