Tulsi Opens This Evening

As expected, Hemant Mathur will open Tulsi for dinner this evening, bringing high-end Indian cuisine to the far eastern end of 46th Street. The 2,000-square-foot restaurant, whose name means "divine basil" in Hindi, will serve a regional Indian menu featuring dishes like semolina-crusted monkfish, goat rogan gosh, and the Manchurian cauliflower that clouded the judgment of countless diners at Dévi. Mathur's wife, Surbhi Sahni, will supply the desserts. A friend of Fork in the Road who attended a friends-and-family preview reports that the food is excellent if a bit pricey, and hopes that the location can support Mathur's ambition.
