The Astor Room Opens Tonight

Astoria was once a center of silent films, thanks to the Kaufman Astoria Studios, which produced over 100 films during the 1920s. And now, for the first time in nearly a century, the studio's former private commissary is open to the public -- in the form of a new restaurant. Per a release, the ginormous space -- over 3,000 square feet -- has been transformed into the Astor Room and is opening tonight at 34-12 36th Street (718-255-1947).
The food is appropriately old-school, with dishes like oysters Rockefeller and lobster thermidor, while nightly specials include duck a l'orange, chicken cordon bleu, and beef Wellington. The full menu can be seen on the Astor Room's website. Cocktails, meanwhile, have been created by mixology pros Lynnette Marrero and Jim Kearns. The restaurant will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to 2 a.m. and Sunday noon to midnight, with a brunch menu served on weekends from noon to 4 p.m.
