ACME Bar & Grill Closes: "It's Sad But True"

ACME Bar & Grill

A few minutes ago, we read some alarming news on EV Grieve: After 25 years, ACME Bar & Grill had gone out of business. So we called the restaurant and confirmed that, unfortunately, it has indeed closed.

"We were here too long and there just wasn't enough business," Tony, the general manager, told us. "It's sad but true." Since 1986, the restaurant, with its distinctive red facade, has been a fixture of Great Jones Street. Located just off of Lafayette Street, it served Cajun and Southern food, along with plenty of beer and cocktails. According to Tony, a new lease has already been signed. He couldn't say whom the new tenant would be, but did allow that "it's probably going to be a restaurant again."

I am truly sad to see this. I drove by the last few weekends hoping I could grab some fried chicken and biscuits and gravy following my class on sat and sunday. I had been going there since 2002, sigh...

my husband and I enjoyed eating at ACME for a bunch of years and were surprised as we went there to eat last night. I'm sorry to see it go.

I will miss this restaurant greatly, as I always ended up breaking bread with media friends as we brainstormed our plans of industry conquest over their fine food and drink and also for the kick ass Rock club that was downstairs. I never had a bad meal or a bad time at Acme or Ace Of Clubs (even when it was called Under Acme). It shall be missed and I thank the staff for always making me feel as if I was at home.

I will believe it when I see it. Been in the industry way too long to hear or see closed for renovations (SALA). and have it stay the same. or even closed to the same.

This is Bob Pollock again, sorry about all the confusion but this has been planned for months and was necessary to close so we can do all the construction for the Acme, please come back in a few months and you'll be bound to see some old friends there. The restaurant biz is a bitch and we have a big job in front of us to build the Acme back. I apologize for the sudden closing but we will make it up with the new Acme. Bob

This is the owner of Acme, we are renovating after 25 years the place needs a major overhaul so please don't put us in the grave so fast. After a C rating from the Bd. of Health and needing vital repairs to outdated AC units and needs for a new exhaust we filed for a renovation with the local community Bd. and building Dept. so look forward to a new and cleaned up Acme in a couple of months. Please call Acme tomorrow to confirm. Thank You Loyal Customers. Bob

Used to play with my band in the basement, used to devour an entire Dixie Eggs on Saturday morning. Will be missed.

Lies. WIll NOT re-open as Acme. Bob and partner (building owners) gave the lease to another restauranteur. It will be just another yuppie eatery.

So if only the restaurant is being renovated what about the club downstairs? I just started doing a Saturday night there and no one said anything to me about closing this past Saturday when I was there.

Acme Is Dead
Acme Is Dead

If this had been "planned" why was the staff informed by coming into work and seeing the place being torn up? Perhaps you have talked about selling it for months (as rumored), but there was no plan in place that said "March 15th Renovations". That's a lie.

You signed a new lease with new restauranteurs and sent everyone packing. They will re-staff. Rudy won't be there. Angel won't be there. The club downstairs won't be there. It will be renovated into another cookie cut-out yuppie eatery complete with expensive cocktails and a lounge in the basement.

IT WON'T BE ACME!

25 years of a NYC brand and you blew it.

B.S. Bob. Will Rudy be there after you "re-open"? Will Tony? Will the club be downstairs?

ACEM is dead. You killed it. And worse, you screwed over the staff and even the club below.

And all the renovations in the world won't help your rodent problem or your "C" rating.

That's a lie. The place will no longer be ACME. New lease, new people, new restaurant. I'm certain it will fit right into the lounge, yuppie dining the rest of the hood has capitulated to. You sold out Bob. Don't lie about it.

In classic New York fashion, apparently the GM quoted above and his staff (and the club downstairs) were all told yesterday (Monday) that they had two days to get out. Knowing owner Bob Pollock, this is NOT surprising...

I heard from someone who worked there. Came to work Tuesday evening, found the place being torn apart. No one had the decency to call him.I live in the neighborhood, have been enjoying Acme (in ALL its incarnations) since the early 90s, when the salad still came in big bowls. This is sad news.

The entire space is being renovated, up and down. New restaurant people who also have the basement. I believe they are turning it into a lounge downstairs. Yuppie paradise.

No one involved with the club knew anything about this until yesterday.

Does anyone know where Rudy is bartending now if he still is.  He made the best hurricanes.
