The Cupcake Stop Has Closed

Could it be that the mighty cupcake bubble has burst? In a sign that the collective appetite for pastel buttercream may be ebbing, the Cupcake Stop announced its closure yesterday on Twitter.

Its website is also down, and no one is answering the phone at the mobile vendor's brick-and-mortar outpost at the Limelight Marketplace, which opened last spring. The business was opened in 2009 by Lev Ekster, a law school graduate who didn't like having to commute to find cupcakes. At the time, he told Serious Eats, "As long as the cupcakes taste good, the 'trend' is here to stay in my opinion."

Does anyone know the reason for the sudden closure? It's kind of odd. They had a good product and they just opened the 70 Greenwich location.

I heard they were trying to navigate through tax issues with the city and state. Let's hope they are back soon.
