UPDATE: Matsugen Closing Due to Contract and Visa Issues
Following speculation that Matsugen would be closing this weekend, we've received both confirmation and a reason for the Tribeca restaurant's closure.
According to a spokeswoman for Jean-Georges Vongerichten, the chef will close the almost three-year-old restaurant on Saturday. The reason, she said, was that Matsugen's three-year contract with the Matsushita brothers, who ran the kitchen, ended this year. In addition, the visas held by the restaurant's other Japanese chefs expire this year. "We just decided it was going to be too complicated to keep it open," Vongerichten's spokeswoman says. She added that they don't yet know if they'll keep the Church Street space, which was previously occupied by Vongerichten's 66.
