What to Drink at Colonie: The Bergamot Margarita

Each week in The Daily Shot, we have ourselves a drink that we think you should try, too.

Mmmm ... bergamotty.
The drink: Bergamot Margarita

The bar: Colonie (127 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn Heights, 718-855-7500)

The price: $11

The ingredients: Reposado tequila, orange liqueur, fresh bergamot, lime, and a salt rim.

The buzz: Bergamot might ring a bell as a botanical used in Earl Grey tea and certain gins. But rarely do you come across the fruit in its natural form. In this margarita, it adds an orangey sweetness to the citrus and enhances the peppery note in the tequila. Now, there are those who consider themselves purists and, thus, too good for a salt rim. Why anyone would turn down the opportunity to lick pure rock salt in a socially acceptable setting is beyond me. Here, the salt is spiced and makes for about as well-rounded a sip as you're likely to find: sweet, salty, sour, spicy, and a touch of the herbal from the gently aged tequila. The only problem is getting it to last more than 10 minutes. Drink slow, young tippler.
