Daniel Boulud to Bring Extra Place up to USDA Standards

Extra Place's vision of suburban bliss will now include charcuterie.

Extra Place has been many things throughout its long, sordid, and illustrious lifetime: part of a farm, home to a speakeasy and metal shop, de facto bathroom and bedroom for patrons of CBGB, and, most recently, the privately owned property of a very large and ugly condominium complex. Now, in addition to a pretty terrific chocolate shop and not-so-terrific taqueria, it will play host to a giant commissary for Daniel Boulud's restaurants.

The Feast reports that the commissary will supply prepped food like sausages, charcuterie, and bread to Boulud's various establishments. The chef is building the space to USDA standards, which implies that he may be moving in the direction of prepared foods and retail operations. Whatever the case, it will also serve as a space for "great parties," as Boulud told the site.

The commissary, which is located but a block away from DBGB, is scheduled to open by July. If there is any justice in the world, it will fill the air around Avalon Bowery Place with the smell of slowly rendering pig's fat.

Avalonbay does not own the Extra Place alley.  New York City does.
