The Chelsea Market Gets Pop-Ups, Pops

There's much ado at the Chelsea Market this week, thanks in large part to the James Beard Foundation. The Beardies yesterday launched JBF LTD, a 27-day pop-up restaurant and food pavilion that will, its website brags, take "the idea of the pop-up restaurant further than it's ever been taken before."

From now until May 14, the restaurant will host visiting chefs who will prepare special dinners, while the event space will be used for culinary demos, panel discussions, and talks with cookbook authors like Joan Nathan and Patricia Wells. Serious Eats checked it out and has a slideshow featuring photos of James Beard's old belongings and a display case full of meat.

Also arriving at the market this week, but with considerably less pomp, is People's Pops, which Grub Street reports will return this Friday to its former haunt near the 15th Street entrance. They'll be giving away free shaved ice starting at 10 a.m., which is as good a reason as we can think of to brave the Bearded crowds.
