Tortilleria Nixtamal and La Newyorkina Are Set to Rock City Hall

Brooklyn Bridge-bound
If the Brooklyn Bridge were a rainbow (and it is! of humanity!), consider this the pot of gold at its end: Next month, Tortilleria Nixtamal will open a kiosk right by the Manhattan foot of the bridge, in the park adjacent to City Hall.

Fernando Ruiz, who owns Nixtamal with Shauna Page, tells us that the kiosk will function as a taqueria; in addition to selling the tortilleria's beloved tacos, it will offer corn, seafood cocktails, and horchata. Dessert will come courtesy of La Newyorkina's Fany Gerson, who will sell her addictive paletas during the summer, and come fall, churros and atole, a hot masa-based beverage that will accompany Nixtamal's own sweet tamales.

As that last detail would suggest, the kiosk won't be a mere summer fling: Ruiz, who last year opened a second Nixtamal location at Señor Tacombi, says that with the exception of January and February, they'll be open year-round. The project came about, he adds, after he was approached by a city employee who had enjoyed a meal at Nixtamal. The kiosk's hours are still uncertain, but, fittingly, Ruiz expects to be open in time for Cinco de Mayo.
