Our 10 Best Things to Eat at Chelsea Market

IMG_2978x.jpg
The throngs pass by, seemingly oblivious of the great eats within.

Throughout much of the 20th century, it was the Nabisco factory, turning out crackers and cookies in a convoluted series of Victorian-era brick buildings. Then, in 1997, it was repurposed as a complex aiming to meet the needs of serious cooks and foodies for raw materials and equipment. But gradually, as Chelsea Market has become one of the city's prime tourist traps, the original intentions have slowly evaporated, such that now it's mainly a shopping-mall food court. Well, so what? There a plenty of good things to chew on, and here is Fork in the Road's ranked list.

10. Mac and Cheese at Ronnybrook Milk Bar -- Served with a couple of slices of marble rye, the mac and cheese from Ronnybrook Dairy is just as elemental as you'd hope: elbows and three cheeses, making a casserole neither too runny nor too firm, with some scallions and bread crumbs sinking into the mellow yellow surface. Vegetarian, 212-741-6455, $7

9. Taco Salad at One Lucky Duck -- Even if you don't go in for the vegan, raw, and organic aesthetic that this stall just off the new 15th Street entrance fervently advocates, the taco salad is a thing of beauty, featuring ripe tomatoes, crisp romaine, pico de gallo, guacamole, flavored crunchy sprinkles, and a cashew "sour cream" that doesn't turn your stomach. Vegan, 212-255-4300, $16

8. Hamburger at Friedman's Lunch -- Made from ground Creekstone Farms brisket and then flame-grilled for extra flavor, the patty sits up high on its brioche bun, flaunting lettuce, purple onions, and tomatoes of pristine quality. And the herbed fries knock the platter for a home run. (Added plus: interesting beer list.) 212-929-7100, $13

Lively lunchtime discussions often originate at the clubby communal table in Friedman's Lunch.

The food looks fine, but I didn't care one bit for the irreverent blasphemy. I see cracks like that all the time, but never say anything. This time, I'm saying something.

Sorry, MissyHolland, as the direct descendant of hyper-Calvinist Dutch Reformed clergy (who basically think everyone is going straight to hell), I'm allowed to make a few blasphemous jokes. Besides, it was Good Friday. Anyway, out of respect for you and my Christian friends, I'm deleting the reference.

You mention Friedman's, but pick the burger over the Reuben?!

Okay, purp, based on your recommendation, I'll go back and try the Reuben again. But I wasn't that impressed with their pastrami (which they put on the Reuben as opposed to the usual corned beef)

not to mention the variety of bakeries as there are several to get your cupcake. the thai place is a find. There is more to the lobster place then the soup which is not my favorite thing there. Go for the fresh sushi and delicious wraps and salads they have there. There is also a crepe place that turns out decent crepes but its almost hard to find since it is near another entrance no one notices. For me I miss just walking in there and eating in a quiet spot since it now is tourist friendly I must arrive early before the rush of tourists which for me spoils it a bit but of course it is good for business

I have the same problem, Joanne, I used to go in there a couple of years ago and there were plenty of tables, now even if you go early the tourist buses have already arrived...

Though I agree with all of the above items I have had the pleasure of enjoying, I would also add the Roasted Tomato and Basil Foccacia Bread from Amy's Bread. When it is heated up in the Panini Maker, it is hot and delicious. Definitely my favorite go-to Chelsea Market item.

Wow!!!!! I can't wait to get my mouth on all of these places.

What about Buddakan? It should count as well

I thought long and hard about including Buddakan and Morimoto, Chai. Both places are worth eating at, but they have separate outside entrances, and didn't really fit in with the dash-in-dash-out food court aesthetic. They're also wildly expensive. (You could probably argue that Green Table doesn't fit, either, but at least that's actually in the mall.)

I don't know if the L'Arte del Gelato stand by the 10th Avenue entrance is still there, but if it is then all of their products should qualify. The gelato is great, and the affogato and hot chocolate with mascarpone gelato are guilty pleasures.

I totally agree, Stephanie, and I even took a picture of my favorite flavor, pistachio, but eventually decided to feature more extensive and savory feeds. Ditto with Jacques Torres chocolates and the newly reopened People's Pops. Just for you, I'm posting a picture of the gelato on a separate page after the piece.
