The pho is simpler than you sometimes find, with only two kinds of beef, while the broth is light and elegant, in the Saigon style. Throw in the sprouts, herbs, and chiles.


In the current Village Voice, my review of the East Village's V-Nam Café appears as a cartoon strip. The place is great, and here is further visual evidence.

Crammed with shrimp, pork, and vermicelli and served with nuoc cham, the spring rolls are particularly good.

The calamari is a bit boring, and the dipping sauce too sweet.

Entrées come with a choice of salad or consommé, both excellent! The consommé, in particular, would do a French chef proud.

The spicy green chicken curry is the second best entrée choice ...

... while the red curry clay pot fish -- covered in caramel -- is nothing short of spectacular.
