Ray's Candy Store Proves That Social Networking Is Good for Something

A year ago, Ray's Candy Store was in the news for all of the wrong reasons: Business was bad; its landlord repeatedly threatened its owner, Ray Alvarez, with eviction; and Alvarez himself spent months fighting to get a green card and benefits. Things finally quieted down a bit, and now, it looks like the 37-year-old store has gotten a new lease on life, as it were, thanks in part to social media.

DNAinfo reports that one of Ray's customers put the store on Twitter, Facebook, and Foursquare, and the sites have all helped to earn the store new business, especially, Alvarez said, "from young people." Guides are even contacting him about bringing groups of tourists through the store, which may make this the first time we've been happy to hear about a part of Lower Manhattan becoming a tourist destination.
