If you shop at the farmers' market and patronize the kind of restaurants that tout their use of local produce, it's easy to view FDA recalls and salmonella-tainted crops as a problem limited to industrialized farming and unscrupulous corporations. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

According to Newsday, the FDA has issued a recall of 138 pounds of cilantro from Satur Farms, the Cutchogue, Long Island, farm whose specialty salad greens, edible flowers, and herbs are beloved by both greenmarket shoppers and restaurants like Per Se, Daniel, and Momofuku. The FDA recalled the cilantro because it had the possibility of being contaminated by salmonella, although no illnesses have been reported to the FDA.

Will this dissuade us from buying Satur Farms produce? Of course not. But it will make us ever so slightly less complacent.
