What to Drink at Jones Wood Foundry: The Italian Diplomat
Each week in The Daily Shot, we have ourselves a drink that we think you should try, too.
The drink: Italian Diplomat
Chantal Martineau The Italian Diplomat
The bar: Jones Wood Foundry (401 East 76th Street, Upper East Side, 212-249-2700)
The price: $10
The ingredients: Cardamaro Amaro, Carpano Antica sweet vermouth, Dolin dry vermouth, stirred and served up.
The buzz: Who says that you need a liquor license to serve great cocktails? In some cases, a beer-and-wine license will do. Meaghan Dorman of Raines Law Room is responsible for the hard-booze-less drinks list here. The Italian Diplomat, an Italian twist on a classic Diplomat, is a little sharper than the original drink, which can sometimes be too sweet. I tend to order a Diplomat as my third drink of the evening, the last one I can manage, because it's wine-based, mostly all vermouth, both sweet and dry. At Jones Wood Foundry, it's a perfect aperitivo, with just enough acidity to get the appetite going. And with a reasonable ABV, three in one seating is easy as pie.
