New Sandwich at Prosperity Dumpling Makes a Fine Breakfast
One of the new items being test-driven at Prosperity Dumpling is a sandwich featuring a fried egg on a wedge of the establishment's giant sesame bread -- which also might be considered an outsize scallion pancake.
Not content to let grass grow under its feet, longtime pot-sticker slinger Prosperity Dumpling has been experimenting with its menu lately. As with most of the northern Chinese dumpling stalls on the Lower East Side, Prosperity makes its own sesame bread, over a foot in diameter. Cut in wedges, it can be had either plain or turned into a sandwich with a thin slice of aromatic, anise-preserved beef -- making a sort of Chinese roast-beef sandwich.
Inside the sandwich is a nicely fried egg (yolk hard).
Now the sandwich roster at Prosperity is expanding. On Sunday morning, I brunched on one of the new items -- a sesame-bread sandwich featuring a fried egg, shredded pickled carrots, and fresh cilantro. The bread was a perfect platform: moist, heavy-crumbed, and dotted with verdant chopped scallions. Altogether memorable, and the price, at $1.75, makes this one of the best sandwich deals in town. Take that, Pret-A-Manger!
