RIP Alex Tombrakos, Owner of Bensonhurst's Vegas Diner

Bensonhurst's Vegas Diner may not be particularly flashy or renowned outside of the neighborhood, but it's a place that has had a loyal clientele since it opened in 1982.

This was in no small part due to owner Alex Tombrakos, who was a constant presence at the 24-hour diner. As The Brooklyn Paper reports, Tombrakos died on April 15 at the age of 70 following a battle with bone cancer. His business partner remembered him as "a pleasure to be around and a good boss," adding that he "helped a lot of people and was just a good person."

The Vegas, of course, will continue to serve the disco fries and chops that helped to make it a neighborhood favorite. And given how quickly other diners seem to be disappearing -- or replaced by diners that are not diners -- its reassuring to know that even if Tomrakos is gone, his legacy will live on.
