This Town Isn't Big Enough For Two Frozen Hot Chocolates

Frozen hot chocolate, Serendipity 3's claim to fame (though there, it's spelled "Frrrozen," because, it's, like, extra-cold), is suddenly at the middle of a controversy now that Dunkin' Donuts has come up with a frozen-hot-chocolate beverage of its own. And Serendipity 3's owners simply aren't having it.

In a press release, Serendipity 3 owner Steven Bruce claims, "We all know that there is only ONE true Frrrozen Hot Chocolate and that was created by Serendipity 3 in 1954."

Now, can a restaurant really claim ownership of a cold hot chocolate? This seems ridiculous, especially following Starbucks' Frappuccino madness that essentially took sweetened frozen coffee (and then non-coffee beverages) and topped them with whipped cream (Ditto Dunkin's own Coolattas). But the Upper East Side kiddie mecca is still annoyed at the supposed imitation beverage. In Bruce's own words, "Imitation is the biggest form of flattery. To all the imitators out there -- go choke on a Munchkin!"

I first went to Serendipity 3 in pursuit of their Frrrozen Hot Chocolate and have since become hooked on it. I was hopeful that Dunkin Donuts' version would be decent since it's much closer to home than S-3 is. As I type this, I'm sipping the DD version...it doesn't hold a candle to the original. What a disappointment.
