It's the beginning of another chapter for the Pink Tea Cup, the storied Grove Street soul-food restaurant that closed in January 2010 after 55 years of service and reopened in another location on Seventh Avenue South later that year. Since its reincarnation the restaurant has done so well that its owner, Lawrence Page, is planning to open a second location in Harlem.
This news comes from DNAinfo, which reports that Page has leased a space at Lenox Avenue and West 120th Street. He was initially planning to call the new outpost the Pink Heifer, a tribute to his partnership with the nonprofit Heifer International, but enough Harlem residents were opposed to the name -- "heifer" is a derogatory term for black women -- that he ultimately returned to "the Pink Tea Cup."
The new location will have 29 tables and an upstairs lounge, as well as the same soul-food menu served downtown. And it isn't Page's only project on Lenox Avenue: He's also planning to open a Moroccan-themed bar within a block of the restaurant.
