R.I.P. Mars Bar 1985 - 2011

All over but the shoutin'

Yesterday afternoon, the Department of Health finished what rampant real estate development started, and shut down the Mars Bar. Despite word that it would reopen, the owner, Hank Penza, decided to close up shop for good.

That news came yesterday evening from EV Grieve, who subsequently reported news of a candlelight vigil outside the bar later that evening. About 25 people attended, and then, all that remained were the 850 fruit flies the DOH discovered throughout the "restaurant" and in a bottle of alcohol. We're not sure what's more disconcerting: the fact that the Mars Bar has finally closed, or that the DOH considered it a restaurant.

I remember my first time there, in 1988 and my last, in 2006.  A place that one could appreciate more as the area became sleeker.  Why was it deemed a restaurant?

Damn. I loved that candy bar. Sigh...What's next, 1000 Grand?
