Where Was I Eating? Graham Avenue Meats and Deli

italian sandwich.jpg

So many sandwiches, so little time. Plenty of people surmised the sandwich's Italian-American origins, but, sadly, only one person can win Where Am I Eating? This week's entry is the famed Godfather sandwich from Graham Avenue Meats and Deli (445 Graham Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn). The sandwich's name might be a little too appropriate considering the butcher shop's owner, Michael Virtuoso, was recently arrested on extortion charges, as his other occupation besides butcher is allegedly loan shark for the Bonanno crime family. Still, his mob ties haven't stopped hordes of Yelpers from flocking to this tiny shop on Graham Avenue, which was once the highest-rated New York restaurant on Yelp (no, we're not kidding).

More sober judgment ranks the Godfather as a pretty damn good sandwich, although certainly not the best in NYC. It comes piled high with mortadella, soppressata, and provolone, with the friendly countermen taking time to re-dress the sandwich between each layer with vinegar and olive oil, which is soaked up beautifully by the crusty roll. It's definitely a good deal for only $7.

Congratulations to Andrea for guessing correctly. Please email Lauren Shockey to claim your cookbook. Everyone else can check back Monday afternoon for another round of Where Am I Eating?
