Ask the Critics: Where Should I Have a Bachelorette Party?

Where to have shenanigans like this?

Yasmin F. Asks: I'm looking for suggestions for a bachelorette party. Somewhere that can accommodate 12 girls and with tasty drinks/food and a fun ambiance.

Dear Yasmin: Bachelorette parties can be tricky because you want a big enough space for lots of giggling and cooing and photographing each other, so you will want something with a fun party vibe. Nothing too serious or formal. Here are some spots that I think might fit the bill.

People always seem to suggest Lucky Cheng's for bachelorettes (drag queens! glitter!), but its food and drinks are truly crappy, so let's skip that. I think you'll have a much better time at newcomer Beauty & Essex. It has a nightclubby vibe but isn't overly obnoxious, and I've seen many a gathering of the ladies there. Plus you can get free champagne in the women's restroom, and if that doesn't say bachelorette, I don't know what does. For something slightly less over-the-top, though, I'd suggest ilili in the Flatiron, which has good Mediterranean food and a buzzy ambiance.

In a similar vein, I think Buddakan would work well, given that the space is vast and the food has actually held up since its Sex and the City heyday. Plus much of it is small bites (dumplings, steamed buns, etc.) good for sharing, so I think that would work in your favor. If you're looking for something slightly cheaper but still in the Asian-food vein, Congee Village might be fun -- plus they have a huge selection of silly cocktails. Grasshopper martini, anyone?

Lastly, I'd suggest Public if you want more of a full meal. They have a nice semiprivate area where I've been for birthday parties, and it would work well for a bachelorette. The restaurant can also tailor menus to your party, if desired.

Just don't drink too much champagne!
