Coney Island Bialy & Bagel, the Oldest Bialy Shop in Brooklyn, to Close
It has not been a good year where Jewish breads and Coney Island are concerned.
Not even two months after H&H Bagels announced it would close its Upper West Side store, The Jew & the Carrot brings the sad news that Brooklyn's oldest bialy shop, Coney Island Bialys & Bagels, will close its doors either before or after the Jewish High Holidays next month.
According to owner Steven Ross, the family-owned business is a victim of the bad economy and changing neighborhood demographics. Ross, whose grandfather opened the bakery in 1920, will be down to three employees, himself included, after this Friday. After he's gone, only Kossar's on the Lower East Side and Bagels by Bell/B&S Bialy in Canarsie will remain. In the meantime, stop by to pay your respects, and taste a piece of New York that's inching ever closer to extinction.
