What to Drink at The Bearded Lady: The Kinky Krown
Each week in The Daily Shot, we have ourselves a drink that we think you should try, too.
The drink: Kinky Krown
Chantal Martineau The Bearded Lady's Kinky Krown
The bar: The Bearded Lady (686A Washington Avenue, Prospect Heights, 469-232-7333)
The price: $9
Ingredients: Plymouth gin, Cointreau, Lillet, Benedictine, and lemon juice, shaken and served up
The buzz: This floral, citrusy sipper -- named for the hair salon that previously occupied the space and reminiscent of an Aviation -- is as refreshing as a new neighborhood bar that has forgone the ubiquitous pressed-tin ceiling and Edison bulbs. Instead of harping on turn-of-the-century or Prohibition-era cachet, the Bearded Lady goes mid-century modern with splashes of vibrant color. Ceiling-high windows flood the place with light and a pleasant breeze; the vibe is cheerful, as opposed to stern, as at so many cocktail bars these days. Not that it's strictly a cocktail bar. Owners Justin Olsen, Patrick Britton, and Mary Gibbons have said it's more of a "beer-and-a-shot" joint that just happens to serve a decent Manhattan. How nice, you think, as the un-mustachioed bartender serves you beer cheese and pickles and free-pours the gin for your cocktail. How nice, indeed.
