Moonshiners -- even those in Brooklyn -- might scoff at the notion of drinking a fancy cocktail made with the white dog. Fair enough. But for those who can't handle the burn of the 'shine, several bars and restaurants in New York City are making moonshine cocktails. Here are three favorites to conclude this week's moonshine coverage.
Cherry Bloom, Top of the Standard
2 oz. Original Moonshine
1/2 oz. Lazzaroni Amaretto
1 oz. blood orange juice
1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
1/2 oz. simple syrup
3 muddled fresh cherries
Shake well and strain into coupe.
Devil in White, the Modern
1.5 oz. Death's Door White Whiskey
1.5 oz. Dolin Vermouth de Chambery Blanc
5 dashes A.B. Smeby Black & White Bitters
Add all ingredients over ice in a Boston Shaker. Stir to bring the spirits and bitters down to temperature and maintain clarity.
Strain into a martini glass with two brandied cherries.
Yoakum County Derby, Hill Country
2 oz. Original Moonshine
1 oz. apricot syrup (recipe below)
Muddle 5-6 mint leaves. Build over ice in double rocks glass. Shake drink to break down syrup. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig.
Apricot Syrup
6 oz. apricot preserves mixed with 6 oz. boiling water
4 mint leaves left to steep about 5 minutes
6 oz. apricot nectar
3 oz. simple syrup
Stir all ingredients until blended well.
